june 2010

hey there!! thanks for a wonderful first year of camp fire, we learned a lot and will continue to bond as a group, it's so exciting!

Three summer activities are on the calendar: The Acoustic Tidal Artwalk at the Colorado Lagoon Friday July 9 and Saturday July 10 from 6pm to 10pm. Music, Art, Food, Crafts (We are hosting a craft table) and lots of info about the restoration of the lagoon. The setting is gorgeous, sunset at the beach, not too hot or too cold and a great way to kick off summer! Join us for an hour or two, help out at the craft table if you can.

Saturday July 31st Camp Fire 100 year birthday party... invites should be coming to you in the mail soon... info will be posted here asap... we are hosting the water table. There will be a large ceremonial campfire set at 7pm.

Camp Shiwaka August 9th through the 13th Day camp meeting set for the weekend before (most likely August 8th) Make sure you pick up a ditty bag kit and sit upon kit at the council store if you don't already have them. We can work on the ditty bag at the day camp meeting, let me know if you are having trouble putting it together. You will need one set of plastic dishes with plastic knife, fork, spoon (don't forget a plastic cup) to put in your ditty bag. During camp you will bring one plastic water bottle full of water on monday, please put your name on the outside with a sharpie, we will use the same bottle the entire week and refill daily.

Have a great summer!!

Summer events

Coming up, a few events to attend:

Friday and Saturday, July 9th and 10th "Acoustic Tidal Artwalk" at the Colorado Lagoon. I am in charge of hosting an arts/crafts/games table/booth area and need my Camp Fire kids to help out. Soon I will have all the details, but if you can volunteer for this event let me know. Friday night will be the hardest night for me since I will be coming straight from work.

It is held at the Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach, last year it was in the late afternoon/evening, official times for this year are not out yet. It is a fun celebration at the beach with displays of art/photos that are influenced by our beaches and wetlands. There will be food, music, activities for the kids, a lovely location. We enjoyed ourselves so much last year, looking forward to being a part of the festivities this year. This is a great way for our camp fire kids to get out in the public showing support for our local wetlands. You can just show up and have fun at this event, either night.

July 31st Saturday
the 100 years of Camp Fire Celebration!!! This event will be starting in the afternoon (around 4pm) and we are signed up to help at a table selling (or giving out??) water. Please mark your calendars for this event and tell all your friends and families to come. this is a National event and 100 year celebrations don't come around every day!!

Camp Shiwaka August 9 through 13 (day camp meeting to be announced, probably Sat or Sun August 7/8)

A few dates to put on your calendar for next year: the Benefit Auction Saturday September 25th, our group will be donating a basket. All groups are invited to attend the dinner and help support Camp Fire. If you are looking for ways to help support Camp Fire in Long Beach, this dinner would be a great way. Camp Fire is always struggling financially, so this might be something your family is interested in attending. It is held at the Long Beach Hilton.

A few fall dates:
October Halloween The Potential Lunatics Concert (I am hoping for Saturday October 30th, will confirm soon)
October 1st Neighborhood potluck, bunco night 6pm
October 23 fall halloween carnival 4-7pm

Winging Ceremony

thanks to everyone who came to our first Spring Camp Out! It was really fun!

Next up is our first Winging Ceremony, Friday May 21st, drop off at 6:30pm at the flagpole at Camp Shiwaka, parents proceed to the back of camp (the amphitheater) to watch the ceremony. It will start at 7pm and lasts about an hour at most. Kids must be in uniform, bring sit upon (or towel or blanket) to sit on, a jacket (they can wear a sweatshirt or turtleneck under their vest). Please bring a package of cookies to share (drop them off at the kitchen in the council on the way in, near the lodge). you can bring siblings, friends, grandparents, anyone who might like to see the ceremony.

Next meeting is Wed May 26th at the church.

Please bring Camp Shiwaka paperwork and checks to the March 26th meeting (make sure the paperwork is filled out correctly or i won't be able to turn any of our stuff in until it is fixed, double check initials and make sure you have the health section filled out) Remember we are going to the third session in August. The training for parents is in June, I will send out an email with that date, I think it is Saturday June 12th in the morning (from 9 to noon) I will confirm this by email and update the blog.

Registration packet is due by our last meeting June 16th. Check is for $26.04 made out to Camp Fire USA and includes the workbook for next year.

Please bring the workbooks for this year to the rest of the meetings. i will try to plan a meeting or two around using them.

June 16th is our last meeting of the year but we can still do fun things together over the summer, let me know if you want to plan something or just send out emails to everyone if you have a good idea, event or want to get together. Your camp fire families are a great support system and we can help each other in many ways so feel free to send out emails to everyone if you need us. My fourth grade group has become so close, many of the parents swap kids for date nights, carpool to school and sport events, share ideas about music lessons, swim classes etc etc. You have a great resource here so use it!

We will have a Camp Shiwaka meeting (that includes the kids) before we attend in August, I will send out emails and post to the blog when and where it will be held.

Thanks Rocket Cats for a great first year!!
